Green Kitchen Remodel - Green Kitchen Appliances

Green Kitchen Appliances

Choose an Energy-Efficient Refrigerator
Refrigerator efficiency has improved significantly over the past decade but the refrigerator still consumes more energy than any other appliance in the kitchen. If you choose to purchase a new refrigerator as part of your remodel, select an ENERGY STAR model. Keep in mind that extra features like ice dispensers reduce the efficiency of the appliance. Likewise, refrigerators with the freezer compartment to the side of the refrigerator are less efficient than models with the freezer door above the refrigerator door. Finally, avoid locating your refrigerator close to heat sources such as the stove or microwave. Heat ducts and even bright sunlight will reduce the efficiency of your refrigerator.

Keeping your old refrigerator for extra food storage may seem like a good idea but it will only unnecessarily increase your energy bill. Instead, simply purchase a slightly larger new fridge that will accommodate your needs. Many programs will happily accept your old refrigerator as a donation. Refrigerators should never go to a landfill since they leach harmful pollutants into groundwater.

Most energy required for dishwashers is used to heat the water. Therefore, look for models that heat less water or include a booster heater that allows you to turn your water heater temperature down to save energy. Heat on/off settings allow you to turn off the heat and air dry dishes to further save energy.

Choose a Stove or Cooktop that Suits the Task
There are numerous options available in this area but generally gas uses less energy than electricity. If you prefer a gas range, you will need to ventilate it to the outside. If your home has a renewable energy source, however, an electric range may be preferable. Either way, this is a good time to install a range so that cooking and combustion byproducts are eliminated from the indoor air.

Consider a convection oven...
